My data science degree apprenticeship experience

Charlie Hunt

I started my Data Science Degree Apprenticeship at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in September 2021 and successfully completed it in January 2025. Prior to applying, I had no experience in Computer Science or coding, so it was an entirely new challenge for me.

I had always planned on undertaking an apprenticeship rather than a traditional university course, as I prefer to see my learning applied directly into a real-world setting. After exploring different apprenticeship opportunities, I came across the GSS Data Science Degree Apprenticeship and was immediately intrigued. I’ve always had an interest in using data to inform decisions, and combining this with the opportunity to learn new skills and gain a recognised qualification made it the ideal choice for me.

Throughout the apprenticeship, I learnt innovative techniques, such as Natural Language Processing and Data Visualisation, that I’ve been able to apply in my daily work. This allowed me to improve existing processes and create new pathways. For example, I’ve recently produced a prototype dashboard that allows my manager to understand and manage project workload as well as see wellbeing within the team.

I learnt quickly that working towards a degree whilst also working a full-time role was a difficult balancing act. However, with good time management and effective communication with my managers, I found my feet and balanced my time well. The best advice I can give new apprentices is to put assessment deadlines into your calendars early so you can plan your workload in advance. Make sure you communicate these with your line manager so they’re aware when your capacity may be stretched.

Whilst working towards my degree, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a variety of topics, such as Education, Housing and Health. I have been fortunate to contribute to several publications, namely working on the education topic team for the 2021 Census where I worked on a publication looking at the Educational Attainment of International Migrants. The diverse range of topics has enabled me to gain exposure to different departments and teams, each with their own way of working. I have since been able to apply these different skills to other areas of the organisation.

I completed my apprenticeship at the end of 2025 and have recently accomplished my second promotion into a new team which has allowed me to continue developing my skills and gaining new experiences. The opportunities I accessed through the apprenticeship helped me build strong professional skills, giving me the confidence and experience to apply for new roles.

I found the apprenticeship to be a rewarding experience. I enjoyed being able to apply my learning straight into my role whilst also working towards a recognised qualification. I would recommend the apprenticeship to anyone thinking of applying, not only has it taught me new skills but enabled me to boost my career with development opportunities.
