This is a part time role. It is part of a job share with an existing member of staff and would suit someone who is looking to work between 16 and 30 hours per week.

The Head of Population Health Statistics will provide leadership on a wide range of analytical requirements on population health, life expectancy and mortality for the Welsh Government. The successful applicant will help Welsh Government meet the objectives of Minsters, policy colleagues and the wider public by providing professional expertise, evidence-based advice, analysis, and guidance.
The role involves overseeing the population health topics within the National Survey for Wales in detail. This includes coverage of adults’ health-related lifestyle and general health. The successful applicant will consider how these topics will be captured in future versions of the survey. They will also be responsible for producing associated analysis and outputs.
The successful applicant will have ownership of the Wellbeing of Future Generations Wales National Indicators on gaps in life expectancy and adults’ healthy lifestyle behaviours. They will also have ownership of the new associated national milestone.
Alongside this, the Head of Population Health Statistics will lead on Welsh life expectancy and mortality statistics. They will work with other departments, organisations and nations to provide advice. They will brief Ministers and senior policy officials for rapid response, for example communicating coronavirus (COVID-19) mortality statistics. They will also provide briefings on long term strategic plans, such as general health outputs from Census 2021.
The successful applicant will be an important member of the Health, Social Services and Population Statistics team. They will work directly to the Head of Health, Social Services and Population Statistics, who is also the Deputy Head of Profession for Statistics in Welsh Government. The Head of Population Health Statistics will also be part of the wider division’s Heads of Branch group.
