This is a mandatory two-part course that must be completed to maintain your GSG membership.

This course will introduce you to statistics and data science across government. It provides an opportunity for you to hear more about some of the great work that is going on in different government departments.

What to expect

You must complete both parts of the induction course. There is no pre-course reading but you should come prepared to discuss what you do in your job.

  • Part one: an e-learning course (one hour)
  • Part two: a live session on Microsoft Teams (three hours)

You will only be able to view and sign up for part two once you have completed part one.

Course content

Part one looks at the role and expectations of a statistician in government and covers:

  • statistical professions and how they sit within the Analysis Function, Government Statistical Service (GSS) and Government Statistician Group
  • an overview of the UK Statistical System, including a section on Devolution
  • the Code of Practice for Statistics and its importance for your work

Part two builds on the learning from part one and covers:

  • introductions and discussions with other members of the statistics profession: learn about what they do and their career journeys
  • the importance of data science and innovation in our roles
  • user perspectives, to support your understanding of the challenges they face
