Statistical engagement groups

Statistical engagement groups meet regularly to discuss official statistics. For instance, they may:

  • discuss official statistics in relation to their work
  • feedback on how statistics meet users’ needs
  • discuss how to improve access to data
  • discuss how to improve the quality of data and statistics
  • run statistical events for members

Statistical engagement groups meet to discuss a variety of statistical topics. The following definitions provide examples of the different types of engagement group. Some groups may have different aims to those listed.

Advisory groups

Advisory groups provide expert advice on topics and issues in statistics. Membership is often established by nominations which aim to represent the needs of the population. Advisory groups are set up to advise on an ongoing topic, such as meeting health statistics users’ needs.

User panels and groups

User panels and groups meet regularly as users of statistics. They aim to represent their area of interest and often discuss concerns and priorities around the quality and scope of statistics for a topic. They aim to ensure statistics meet their needs, share expertise, and identify issues.

Steering groups

Steering groups manage or direct decision making about statistics based on expert advice and knowledge. They often work on providing solutions to challenges. Membership includes senior experts, senior stakeholders, and board members.

There are many statistical engagement groups in the United Kingdom. This pages lists some examples of statistical engagement groups which you can join or provide feedback to. If you would like more information or to add your group to the list, please email Engagement.Hub@ons.gov.uk.
