Are you interested in the ethics, politics, and real-world impacts of artificial intelligence? The Data Ethics and Society Reading Group invites government analysts to join our May 2026 session, exploring two thought-provoking works: The AI Con by Emily Bender and Alex Hanna, a critical examination of how AI is marketed versus what it actually delivers, and E.M. Forster’s prescient 1909 short story The Machine Stops, which imagines a world of total technological dependency with unsettling relevance today.

No prior reading is required to attend; discussions are designed to be accessible whether or not you’ve read the texts.

If you work in analysis and care about how technology shapes society, we’d love to have you along on Wednesday 13 May, 12:00-13:00.
