About the role

The Union Directorate in the Cabinet Office are seeking a data scientist for an exciting and stretching opportunity . The Union Directorate is a new, high profile team at the very heart of Government. It brings together policy professionals, analysts, comms experts and secondees from outside Government and is responsible for developing and implementing an overarching strategy for ensuring that the benefits of the Union are clear, visible and understood by all citizens. They generate and foster big ideas, drive delivery across Whitehall and beyond, and work collaboratively and creatively to promote, amongst other things, the ‘levelling up’ agenda, the post-C19 recovery and renewal across all four nations of the United Kingdom.

The key responsibility of the role will be the development and delivery of the Live Union Dashboard, an online interactive platform used to present the latest quantitative analysis and qualitative insights relevant to the Union to Ministers, SpAds and Senior Civil Servants in 10 Downing Street, the Cabinet Office and from across Whitehall.

They are interested in candidates at Senior Executive Officer or Grade 7 level with a range of experience in the data science profession. You will be available for an initial period of six months, with the possibility of extension. This role will allow the post holder to bring together expert analysis, data visualisation and data science, and will provide a unique insight into the workings of Government at the very highest level. You will be expected to develop our online interactive platform in partnership with 10DS data scientists (Downing Street’s specialist data science unit) and will be co-located with the 10S team. You will deliver bespoke technical solutions and  maintain a high quality user experience for our stakeholders. The best candidates will have the ability to manage multiple competing priorities, effectively identify and solve technical challenges as well as strong analytical ability.

Skills and experience:

  • prior experience in analysing data to draw new insight and present it to stakeholders
  • proficiency in Python programming
  • experience with visualising various types of data such as geospatial and time series
  • (ideally in Python)
  • good working knowledge of data manipulation using Python
  • good working knowledge of version control software (Git)
  • knowledge of the Plotly and Dash libraries for visualisation in Python is a plus
  • working knowledge of HTML and CSS is preferred
  • some knowledge or awareness of SQL
