Strategies for learning and development

There are  many different ways in which you can learn and develop your skills. Different approaches may be needed for different people and different types of skill. On this page we outline a few strategies you could take.

On the job learning

This is about individuals seeking opportunities to learn as part of their day to day job. It can be done through observation, demonstration, practising techniques, having tasks delegated to you and by taking part in coaching and mentoring. It is the most effective and efficient means of developing capability.

Self-managed learning

This can be done through reading, eLearning and further education. It is most effective when it supports on the job learning, it must be relevant.

Deployment

This can be done through loans, secondments, temporary assignments and special projects. It can be very effective when it is properly managed and planned.

Group learning

This can be done through working in cross functional teams (e.g. working groups), engaging with communities of practice and networking. The key to success is the management of the group and the attributes of the individual members. It can be resource intensive and time consuming.

Tutor-led training

This can be done through attending training courses, seminars and taking part in development programmes. To be effective it must be relevant to your current work situation. An opportunity to put this learning into practice should be provided immediately after you have completed the training.
