The Types of Data in Government learning pathway is an introduction to the various types of data you may come across including administrative data, index numbers, time series and more. This pathway is aimed at those new to using data, or those new to working in the civil service who may not have worked with these types of data previously.

Learning objectives

  • Have a solid understanding of various types of data and how they can be used.
  • Be aware of some of the methods used to produce official statistics and the range of data covered in the civil service.
  • Be aware of what data is available to inform analysis.

General background

Frankie has worked in analytical roles for some time, however, this is their first civil service job.

Starting point

Frankie is used to working with data from a wide range of sources and has completed introduction to Python.

Perceived needs

Frankie would like to get a better understanding of the data they are or will be working with and how this differs from the data they are used to working with. Frankie also needs to better understand how to produce official statistics.

Special considerations

Frankie is aware that there is a lot of training available but would like to start with some courses that link together.
