Predictive analysis learning pathway

Description

Predictive analysis is a branch of analytics that is used to make “predictions” about unknown events. Predictive analysis employs techniques from data mining, statistical modelling, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to analyse current data, in order to make predictions about the future. The pathway covers statistical modelling approaches, leading to statistical machine learning techniques (decision trees, regression, classification, clustering) in R and Python.

Learning objectives

  • Explain the role of predictive for data driven decision making.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of statistical principles, statistical distributions, sampling and inference techniques.
  • Demonstrate analytical decision-making ability using decision trees, classification, regression and clustering techniques.
  • Execute predictive analysis experiments in R and Python and evaluate the performance of statistical models

Length

This pathway contains four courses.

Persona

To help decide if this is the pathway for you, this learning persona is designed to create a realistic representation of the intended learning audience.

General background

Mike has been working in an analysis role for some time.

Starting point

Mike is comfortable and confident with traditional statistical modelling techniques but is conscious that his colleagues are moving towards an updated approach.

Perceived needs

Mike is keen to explore topics such as data mining and machine learning. He has heard colleagues discussing them but is not really confident that he knows exactly what they entail.

Special considerations

As this is an area he is not familiar with Mike would prefer trainer led courses so make him feel more confident. He is also aware that he will have to complete the pre-requisite courses.

Summary

Predictive analysis employs techniques from data mining, statistical modelling, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to analyse current data, to make predictions about the future. This pathway introduces the modern data science spectrum, and the role predictive analysis plays in data driven organisations.
