About this event
This event explores the relationship between work and health using linked data and is part of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) event series ‘Research Excellence 2025’.
This presentation will show how the ONS is analysing how health affects employment using a new data asset for England that links Census respondents to NHS health records, ONS death registrations, H M Revenue & Customs (HMRC) pay-as-you-earn records and Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) benefit receipts.
Early findings show that people from ethnic minority and deprived backgrounds were more likely to claim benefits during COVID-19. Weight-loss surgery improves employment prospects for up to five years, while talking therapies help people with mental health conditions return to work even seven years post treatment. Findings have also shown that women with endometriosis face reduced earnings post-diagnosis. ONS will continue publishing insights throughout 2025 to inform policies that support health, employment, and economic growth.
