About the course

This training is delivered across two linked morning sessions. Participants are expected to attend both parts.

The course combines short expert presentations, practical demonstrations, and live discussion.

It is designed as an accessible gateway introduction for civil servants interested in understanding how space-derived data can support their work.

Day one – Foundations and Access Tuesday 17 March, 09:00 to 12:30

This session introduces the fundamentals of Earth Observation (EO) and how civil servants can begin using EO data in practice.

Topics include:

  • Introduction to Earth Observation (EO) – what EO is, how it works and what it can (and cannot) tell us
  • Accessing EO data and services – where to find EO datasets and platforms such as the UK EO Data Hub
  • Practical demonstration – exploring EO data and products in real-world platforms
  • EO in policy and decision-making – how EO contributes to evidence chains
  • Sector example – water, marine or environmental monitoring case study
  • Live discussion and Q&A

Day two – Value, Limitations and Future Opportunities Thursday 19 March, 09:00 to 12:30

Topics include:

  • The value of EO data – benefits and limitations in operational and policy settings
  • Practical demonstration – interpreting EO outputs and understanding uncertainty
  • International perspectives – how EO is used in other countries and programmes
  • Applied EO beyond environment – examples from wider policy domains
  • The future of EO data and platforms
  • Open discussion and next steps
