Social anthropologist Dr Katherine Smith will be speaking about her new book, which is based on over a decade of ethnographic research in one of England’s most deprived neighbourhoods. “Living with Poverty and Dependence in England” interrogates the conditions of social life and survival in Harpurhey, Greater Manchester. It provides in-depth insight into the actual, everyday experiences of people living with poverty in their own words and from their perspective. Addressing ongoing debates concerning neoliberalism, austerity and moral panics concerning poverty, the book explores the relationships between persons, and between persons and the state, with a focus on reciprocity as a survival strategy.
Who this session is for
The session will be relevant to people with an interest in the lived experience of poverty or social exclusion, housing, crime and policing, or in community studies and ethnographic research methods.
