Artificial Intelligence (AI) learning and development

We are committed to supporting analysts across the UK to build confidence and capability in using AI. This page brings together the main AI learning opportunities in one place, from introductory awareness through to more advanced skills.

If you’re unsure where to start or need help navigating the options, your departmental analysis lead or profession representative can help with local advice and signposting.

Digital and AI learning in one place

In April 2026, the Government Digital and Data profession launched a new digital, data, innovation and AI curriculum. This is a significant step forward for learning across the Civil Service, bringing greater clarity and consistency to digital and AI development.

The curriculum signposts users to a variety of AI courses on Civil Service Learning. Each course is now more clearly described, which makes it easier to find the right learning for your role and experience level.

Digital and AI learning by level

This section contains a summary of the courses available at different levels to help build AI capability across the Analysis Function.

AI: Fundamentals

AI: Fundamentals is a growing collection of learning modules to help civil servants get a working understanding of AI, its associated technologies, and the opportunities it offers.

An introduction to AI in the Civil Service

AI for all: Part 1 – An introduction to AI in the Civil Service was originally developed for the annual One Big Thing campaign in 2025. This short course introduces AI in the Civil Service and sets the stage for further learning.

Building practical AI skills in the Civil Service

AI for all: Part 2 – Building practical AI skills in the Civil Service guides participants to explore what AI is and how it works across three short segments, including different technologies and terminology such as Generative AI.

Building on the AI: Fundamentals course, the following courses provide more learning for those interested in deepening their understanding:

AI for all: An SCS pathway is a two part course that provides all SCS with knowledge on how AI can be an agent for change in their work areas.

Other learning opportunities and topics

The Government Campus AI Prospectus provides further opportunities for you to explore a host of new AI technologies. It will guide you to consider their potential applications and limitations before showing you how to use AI-powered tools both safely and efficiently. Go further still, by mastering AI and cloud engineering skills in order to train and implement AI solutions.

The AI Skills Hub is a free, open‑access skills programme available to everyone. It covers a wide range of topics from introductory concepts to more advanced AI skills. These resources can be used alongside Civil Service Learning to support your development.

AI learning for devolved government

We want everyone across the Analysis Function to have access to high quality learning and development opportunities. Most resources on this site are available to all analysts, but a small number of links may only work for colleagues on the UK Government IT network.

If you are part of a Devolved Government and find that a link does not open or a course is not accessible, don’t worry – there are still plenty of ways to get the support you need:

  • check your department or organisation’s own learning and development (L&D) offer – Many Devolved Governments have their own learning platforms, training catalogues, and AI capability programmes that mirror or complement what’s available in UK Government departments
  • speak to your line manager or local L&D lead – they may be able to direct you to equivalent training, authorise access, or help you find alternative options within your organisation
  • use the content for guidance even if the links don’t work – the themes, learning pathways, and recommended skills on the AF AI Hub are still relevant, even if specific courses differ across administrations
