Nominations open for the 2025 Government Science and Engineering (GSE) Awards

Following on from the success of last year’s inaugural Government Science and Engineering (GSE) Awards I am delighted to announce that nominations for 2025 are now open.

Last year, the quality of the submissions blew us away and we are so thankful to everyone who took time to nominate a colleague or a team.

This year, we’re presenting eight awards, including a new prize for 2025, the Rising Star Award. This award celebrates the rising stars of the Government Science and Engineering Profession – those early in their careers who are already making a meaningful impact. Whether through fresh thinking, bold initiative, or outstanding contributions to their teams or projects, these individuals exemplify the promise and potential of the next generation of scientists and engineers in government.

I am really pleased we have these awards to recognise the hard work of our members and to highlight the amazing science and engineering work that is going on across government. Please do take the opportunity to nominate your colleagues and teams.

— Professor Dame Angela McLean, Head of GSE Profession and Government Chief Scientific Adviser

While anyone can nominate, these awards are open only to GSE members. Please fill in the GSE Awards nomination form if you would like to nominate a colleague or team. The last date for nominations is 14 October 2025.

Hear from last year’s winners

“I am honoured to receive the innovation 2024 award across Government, Science and Engineering, presented by Professor Dame Angela Mclean. This award is a testament to what can be achieved when science and engineering expertise is applied with purpose and supported by a community committed to excellence. Thank you GSE!”

– Stacey Rothwell, winner of the 2024 Government Science and Engineering Award for deployment of rapid video response in policing.

“I was delighted to win the GSE leadership award in 2024. It meant a lot to me to be recognised for the positive impact I have made as lead scientist for the circular economy directorate in Defra, where I have built a new directorate wide team, and lead a team of excellent scientists and R&D professionals working at the science-policy interface to drive forward evidence based policy making in areas such as climate change, circular economy and waste.”

– Lynsay Blake, winner of the Government Science and Engineering Leadership Award.
