National Apprenticeship Week 2022

National Apprenticeship Week 2022 takes place from 7 to 13 February 2022.  This year’s theme is “Build the Future”.

This is the 15th annual celebration of apprenticeships. The week-long celebration will showcase the positive effect apprenticeships can have on communities, local businesses, and regional economies. There will be celebrations of apprenticeships throughout the week across virtual, traditional and hybrid events.  You can find out more about the events on the National Apprenticeship National Apprenticeship Week 2022 website.

National Apprenticeship Week 2022 will concentrate on showing how apprenticeships are the future of business success. It will also show how apprenticeships help to:

The week is a great opportunity to celebrate with the whole apprenticeship community and find out more about the benefits of apprenticeships. It will also demonstrate the opportunities for progression and show how apprenticeships work for individuals, employers, local communities, and the wider economy.

Government Statistical Service (GSS) apprenticeships

We are encouraging everyone to consider how apprenticeships can help you develop the skills and knowledge needed for a rewarding career in the GSS and departments across government.

A GSS apprenticeship will build the skills and knowledge you will need for an incredible career.

The GSS recruits apprentices into departments annually and there are two schemes. We offer a:

Both schemes are open to current staff of any grade. You can undertake either of these apprenticeships as a development opportunity.

Our first GSS apprentices completed the Data Science Degree Apprenticeships with Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2021. These successful apprentices initially began with a L4 Data Analytics apprenticeship. They continued their success by going on to complete the Data Science Degree Apprenticeship.

You can watch a celebration film to see what Sir Ian Diamond, the National Statistician; Jason Bradbury, the GSS Head of Profession at the Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED); and others think about the achievements of our first set of degree apprentices.

An apprenticeship success story

Hannah Williams is one of our successful apprentices.  She joined Qualifications Wales in 2017 as an L4 Data Analytics apprentice. Before that, Hannah studied English Literature and worked in pensions administration.

Hannah impressed everyone in the organisation with her excellent skills and attitude. After she completed her L4 qualification, Hannah took up a permanent position as a data analytics officer in 2019. She progressed to the L6 Applied Data Science apprenticeship while she was in this role.

Hannah completed her degree in June 2021 and has now been promoted into the senior statistician role in Qualifications Wales. She will be managing a statistician and data analytics officer in this role. She will also oversee data collection from external organisations and the production of a suite of official statistics publications.

Tom Anderson, Head of Research and Statistics at Qualifications Wales, said: “Hannah’s success shows the value of data analytics apprenticeships to the Analysis Function in government. At a time where the labour market is extremely competitive for specialist analysis skills, this route for recruiting and developing professionals should be an important part of recruitment strategy.

“Hannah’s diverse skills and experience have been a real benefit to my team in Qualifications Wales. The experience has shown me the importance of people in analytical teams that can help tell the story of the statistics.”
