Announcing all winning entries in the Fourth Analysis in Government Awards

Voting is now closed for the People’s Choice Award. The winner will be announced at our Celebration Day event on Monday 19 February 2024.

We have had a fantastic week celebrating the excellent analysis conducted across government. We received over 100 outstanding nominations this year, which highlights the huge amount of great work going on across government analysis.  

Our panel of esteemed judges have reached a decision, and we are excited to announce the winners, runners up and highly commended entries for the Fourth Analysis in Government (AiG) Awards! 

Not only that, but you can also vote for the Winner or Runner Up you are most inspired by to win our People’s Choice Award. The overall favourite will be announced at the Analysis in Government Awards Celebration Day on Monday 19 February, so make sure to get your votes in! The event will take place online and you can register to attend Celebration Day on Eventbrite. We look forward to seeing you at the event.  

Collaboration Award

This award celebrates a person or team who has collaborated between teams, departments, other professions, external organisations or researchers to produce a piece of analysis or analytical project. 

Winners

This year we have two winners:

  • the Data First Team at the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) for their work on ‘harnessing the power of linked data and academic collaboration to improve justice outcomes’
  • the cross-government Crisis Data Liaison Officer (DLO) Network, led by a Cabinet Office team

Highly commended

Two highly commended awards go to: 

  • the Reducing Parental Conflict Evaluation Team, Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for their work on the evaluation of the Reducing Parental Conflict (RPC) programme
  • the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Analysis Steering Board Secretariat at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and Office for National Statistics (ONS) for championing and coordinating AI analysis across government

Communication Award

This award celebrates those who have successfully used clear communications to present analysis, considering needs of the audience. This could be an example of public-facing or internal communication within teams, departments or across professions. 

Winner

The winner of the Communication Award is the Digital Content Innovation team at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for their work on Census localised content.

Runner-up

The runner-up for the Communication Award is the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Lifestyle and Risk Factors Analysis Branch for their project ‘Smoking habits in the UK’.

Highly commended

The highly commended award goes to the Social Research team at the Department for Transport (DfT) for ‘Transport User Personas: putting people at the heart of our decisions in the DfT’. Congratulations!

Impact Award

This award will recognise analysis which has made an impact through use, influenced decision-making or contributed to public debate. 

Winner

The winner of the Impact Award is the Public Services Analysis Team in the Analytical Hub at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for their work investigating the ‘Experiences of Homes for Ukraine Scheme Sponsors’.

The runner-up for the Impact Award is the Environment Agency Flood Digital Team for their ‘Hello EA’ project.

  • the Project Hawthorn Analytical Team at the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) for their smoke-free generation announcement analysis
  • Better Outcomes through Linked Data at the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) for supporting delivery of key analytical outcomes

Inclusion Award

This award recognises an outstanding contribution in making the Analysis Function a more inclusive Function that is reflective of the citizens we serve, or an outstanding contribution in producing analysis on diversity or inclusion. 

Winner

The winner of the Inclusion Award is Matt Jonas from the Insight and Service Design Team in Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for their work on ‘understanding the needs of non-English speaking and disabled high-rise residents’.

The runner-up of the inclusion award is Adrian Lavery from the Education Authority Northern Ireland for ‘placing Ukrainian children in schools’.

  • People and Business Services at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for the Inclusion Dashboard and Hold to Account Process 
  • Sue Kirk at the Department for Education (DfE) as the lead for mutual mentoring to support diversity and inclusion (D&I) in Analysis Function and DfE

Innovative Methods Award

This award recognises innovative methods or techniques of analysis. 

Winner

The winner of the Innovative Methods Award is the Noise and Statutory Nuisance Team at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) for the Defra Noise Modelling System.

Runner-up

The runner-up for the Innovative Methods Award is the White Paper Artificial Intelligence (AI) Team, comprising colleagues from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and Office for National Statistics (ONS) for the development of the White Paper call for evidence ‘Innovative use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to analyse responses’.

Two highly commended awards go to: 

  • the Cost Assurance and Analysis Service at the Ministry of Defence (MOD) for the Early Phase Estimating Hackathon
  • the COVID-19 Analysis Coordination and Evaluation Compliance team at HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for their work on accounting for non-detection of error and fraud within estimates

The Professor Sir Ian Diamond Rising Star Award

This is an award recognising a person who has displayed excellence in championing or promoting the Analysis Function. The winner of The Professor Sir Ian Diamond Rising Star Award will be someone in the first 5 years of their career as a government analyst who has gone above and beyond what would be expected for an analyst of their experience, or who has championed the importance of analysis.  

Winner

The winner of the Professor Sir Ian Diamond Rising Star Award is Steve Chick from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for his work inspiring analysts across the Analytical Community.
