We all make a contribution to the success of Government Statistical Service (GSS) and we all have an opportunity to develop our careers and skills to fulfil our potential. We need to develop talent at all levels to ensure that we have skilled and adaptable leaders for the future. We also need people that can achieve in critical roles and build knowledge.

There are many resources available to help you achieve your full potential.

One to one meetings with your line manager

Make sure you are having good quality, focused conversations to discuss your career aspirations, performance and potential with your line manager. You can find guidance to help you prepare for these meetings and structure your conversations on the Civil Service Learning website.

Nine box grid ratings

Know what your nine box grid ratings are and discuss your development aspiration and requirements. For more information about nine box grids and how to use them, please email the team at Analysis.Function@ons.gov.uk.

Future Leaders Scheme

The cross government Future Leaders Scheme (FLS) is a 16-month accelerated development programme. Around 400 high potential Grade 6s or Grade 7s are in each cohort.

The scheme provides a leadership development curriculum, which supports civil servants in accelerating their development as well as learning more about their personal leadership effectiveness. You will need department support for annual application process. You can find more information about the application process for the Future Leaders Scheme on the Civil Service Learning website.

The Minority Ethnic Talent Association (META) programme is integrated as part of the FLS and is open to participants on the programme who identify as being from an ethnic minority background. The Disability Empowers Leadership Talent (DELTA) programme is also integrated as part of the FLS and is open to participants on the programme who have a disability or long-term health condition.

Analysis Function Career Framework

The Analysis Function (AF) Career Framework sets out the range of careers available to analysts. The Career Framework describes the analytical roles and the main skills that are required at the different levels through role profiles and career pathways.

Analysis Function Online Skills Tool

The Analysis Function Online Skills Tool (OST) will help you:

  • find your current skills level
  • discover what you need to learn to get where you want to go in your career
