Steve Ellerd-Elliot is the Government Statistical Service (GSS) Head of Profession (HoP) at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

I have previously held posts as the Head of Profession for Statistics in the Ministry of Justice and the Head of Statistics in the National Offender Management Service.

I have been in the GSS for over twenty-five years and have experience across a variety of departments and roles. I have experience in:

  • developing management information for performance reporting
  • producing statistics and working with survey data
  • designing forecasting models
  • providing analysis to inform policy development

Throughout these roles the importance of data and statistics has always been clear.

Confidence and trust are important principles to how we all work. Whether we are producing or using statistics, we can all work to ensure that what we do reflects user’s needs, supports decisions and can be trusted. I’m really pleased that this year we have published the first DWP Statistical Work Programme and User Engagement Strategy to support this aim.

I live in Welwyn Garden City with my wife and two daughters. I am a keen runner, and run with the Welwyn Garden City Runners. My favourite type of holiday is a camping holiday, and I love getting out to hear live music.
