About this event
Brexit didn’t just change politics; it changed how UK businesses operate.
This talk explores an important but often overlooked part of that story: how service‑sector firms adapted when trading with Europe became more difficult, and what those changes meant for UK jobs and investment.
We are pleased to welcome Assistant Professor Martina Magli from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU Munich). Martina and her team received a commendation at last year’s ONS Research Excellence Awards.
Using linked data held in the Office for National Statistics’s Secure Research Service (SRS), Martina reveals how UK companies altered the way they delivered services to EU clients after 2016. This included a shift from direct exporting to serving customers through EU‑based affiliates. This strategy helped many firms absorb the impact of rising trade barriers, but it also brought consequences for employment in the UK.
