Professor Sarah Sharples: Human Factors in Government

The Government Office for Science presents this event for civil servants with Professor Sarah Sharples, putting human-centred design at the heart of policy and delivery.

Human Factors (also known as Ergonomics) is the application of psychological and physiological principles to the engineering and design of products, processes, and systems. It is a discipline that can often go under the radar in government and industry, but is fundamental to designing safe, secure and responsible systems.

Sarah Sharples, a Professor in Human Factors at the University of Nottingham as well as the Chief Scientific Adviser for Department for Transport, will discuss her perspective on how increased understanding and use of human factors has helped her in her role through reflecting on human factors in automation, human factors in decarbonisation, and human factors in government more generally.

Sarah’s talk will be followed by a panel discussion where she will be joined by the Chief Executive and President of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors.
