On 1 October we celebrate the 34th International Day of Older Persons with a collection of publications and events. Our work uses data to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities faced by aging populations.
We are holding a webinar to celebrate the work of the Titchfield City Group on Ageing (TCGA) on ageing related statistics and age-disaggregated data. The session marks the end of the ONS’ chair of the group and the release of the report ‘Improving the visibility of older persons in global statistics’, this will be published on the United Nations Statistics Division website on 1 October. The webinar is a chance to come together to hear a keynote address from senior leaders from the ONS, hear the report findings and join in with questions on a panel discussion by members of the TCGA.
The TCGA’s purpose is to contribute to establishing international standards and methods for the compilation of statistics and data on the major dimensions of ageing and age-disaggregated data across the life cycle. It is also to collaborate with United Nations (UN) bodies and other organisations concerned with specific aspects of ageing and age statistics.
The publications include:
- Our Estimates of the very old, including centenarians, England and Wales: 2002 to 2023 bulletin describes changes in the estimated size of the 90 years and over population in England and Wales.
- Our National life tables – life expectancy in the UK: 2021 to 2023 bulletin shows trends in period life expectancy for the UK and constituent countries, and will be out later in the year.
