As part of the Government Office for Science, Science and Society webinar series, Professor Ian Walker will be presenting on recent social science work from across a range of applied areas, including transport mode choice and energy saving. Ian is an environmental psychologist who works on behaviours across transport, road safety, energy consumption and water use.

By looking at behavioural interventions, Ian will explain the opportunities and the limits of ‘soft’ policy interventions. He will discuss psychological barriers to behaviour change such as habits, and situational barriers to change such as social and physical environments, suggesting these factors might be much bigger determinants of people’s behaviour than what people wish to do. Building on this Ian will explore how situational interventions are likely to be the most effective for producing long-term shifts in public behaviour.
