Proud to be a government analyst: launching “A strategy for analysis in government 2025 to 2028

Today, I am delighted and proud to launch “A strategy for analysis in government” – a bold and ambitious vision that maps out the future for government analysis across the next three years.
This strategy sets out a clear path to strengthen our collective capability, deepen our impact, drive innovation where it matters most and ensure that analysis remains at the heart of effective decision making. This strategy is a roadmap for transformation, building on the strong foundation we have laid in recent years and sets a clear direction for how we take the next steps to grow our capability, empower our community, and ensure our work continues to shape the decisions that matter most.
Throughout my career, I’ve witnessed the extraordinary power of analysis to change lives. Whether it’s shaping long term policy, guiding national responses, or helping the public make sense of a complex world, our work matters. From my time in the National Health Service (NHS) through to my current role as Acting National Statistician and Head of the Analysis Function one truth has remained constant; the best decisions are grounded in the best evidence. They are also usually enabled by a multidisciplinary team, no one single individual but a community of experts creating and judging evidence. This evidence comes from all of you – the analysts who turn data into insight, and help insight become action. This is a profound privilege and responsibility.
We’ve listened to analysts across government and beyond to shape a strategy that is both ambitious and practical. “A strategy for analysis in government” reflects the qualities and values that define professional analysts; our curiosity, collaboration, innovation and skills. It also recognises the challenges ahead, from the rise of AI to the continued need to work across boundaries to harness the power of data.
Now, more than ever, we need to come together as one community – to break down barriers, embrace reform, and position ourselves at the centre of a civil service that is fit for purpose.
Every analyst has a role to play, whether you’re just starting your journey, or you are leading a team of experts, your contribution is vital. In the months ahead, we’ll share more on how you can bring this strategy to life in your own organisation. A great place to start is the new Analysis in Government Strategy Hub, where you’ll find many useful resources and information, including inspiring case studies showcasing the range of great work going on across government.
Thank you all for everything you do. I’m incredibly proud to be part of this community and I am excited to see what we will achieve together.
